Her Size

The chest, every time. Weight is the roughest of the four numbers because build varies so much. A barrel-chested corgi and a lean whippet can weigh the same and be two sizes apart. We list weight as a sanity check. The tape around the chest is what we size from.

No, and please do not size up because of it. This is the single most common sizing mistake we see.

The back figure describes the dress, not a bar she has to come in under. Our dresses sit above the tail on purpose, so most dogs measure a couple of inches longer than the figure for the size they wear, and it looks exactly as it should.

Lean bigger. A tape pulled through dense fur reads smaller than what the dress actually has to sit over, so measure across the coat rather than under it, and take the larger size if you land between two.

Huskies, samoyeds, chow chows, keeshonds, malamutes, akitas, rough collies, shepherds, bernese, great pyrenees, newfoundlands and full-coat poodles all sit in this bracket, as do coated small breeds like pomeranians, shih tzus, havanese and bichons. Freshly groomed and freshly blown out really are two different sizes on the same dog.

One does. Fairydew slips on over the head and front legs instead of buttoning up. Every other style buttons, and sizes exactly to the chart.

Whether that changes her size depends on her coat, not on the style by itself. If she has a thick or double coat, take the next size up in Fairydew. If her coat is smooth or medium, size to the chart exactly as you would for any other style.

Ice Bear, our samoyed, measures a XXL on the chart and wears the 3XL in Fairydew. It is her ruff that has to clear her head, not the neckline on its own. That is why the size finder at the top of this page asks about her coat on Fairydew, and why it will not guess if you skip the question.

It maps 77 breeds onto our chart using the chest ranges published in breed standards and professional harness and coat sizing charts, so you get a real starting size rather than a guess. Where two sources disagree we use the wider range, because a dress that is slightly roomy is a much smaller problem than one that will not close.

What it cannot do is know your dog. Inside a single breed the chest can vary by six inches depending on build and coat. Use it to get close, then measure to be certain.

A little. Females of the same breed run roughly an inch narrower through the chest, which is rarely a full size but is enough to matter at the top of the range. The breed finder adjusts for it wherever the difference is documented, and hides the option where it is not.

Most size charts quote one mixed range and leave owners of big girls ordering too large. We would rather split it out. Measure her chest and you skip the question entirely.

Usually a 4XL. Most female goldens measure 28 to 35 in around the chest, and the middle of that sits comfortably in 4XL. A bigger girl runs to 5XL or 6XL.

Yes. We size by chest girth rather than by species, so the chart works exactly the same way. Most cats measure 12 to 20 in (30 to 51 cm) around the chest, which is XXS to M. A british shorthair at 13 in wears an XS. There is no separate cat line, it is the same dress and the same chart.

Not at the moment. Every piece is made to our published range, XXS to 6XL, which tops out at a 37 in (94 cm) chest. If she measures larger than that, we would rather tell you plainly than sell you something that will not close.

The measurements are. The cut varies slightly by design, and Fairydew slips over the head rather than buttoning, so a thickly coated dog may want the next size up in it. A few styles run a shorter size range for now, and that is always stated on the product page.

Every piece is made by hand, so finished measurements can vary by 1 to 3 cm. It does not affect the fit, and it is part of why no two are quite identical.
