The short answer: ignore the letter on the tag and the breed on the box, and look for a chest measurement. Many dog clothing lines top out around a 24 in chest, which is a medium dog. Big breeds usually measure 28 to 37 in around the chest, and two dogs of the same breed can be two sizes apart. Measure her, over the fur, and pick the dress whose chest range covers that number.
Why "XL" means nothing on its own
Every brand draws its own size lines. One brand's XL is another's medium. At Fluffit, XL fits a chest up to 23.6 in. Our largest size, 6XL, fits up to 37 in. If a listing does not tell you the chest range, you are guessing.

Chest beats weight
As a rough guide, our 3XL suits dogs around 30 to 40 lb, 4XL around 40 to 50 lb, 5XL around 50 to 60 lb and 6XL around 60 to 70 lb. But two 50 lb dogs can be a full size apart. A deep-chested shepherd and a long, lean lab carry weight differently. The tape wins. Here is how to measure her in two minutes.
Four things to check before you buy
- A published chest range. Not just S, M, L.
- How it closes. Fastening styles are easier on big, fluffy dogs. Pull-on styles go over the head and need more room, so size up if she has a thick ruff or a broad head.
- How it moves. Big dogs stride. A skirt that sits above the tail and clears the back legs lets her walk and sit normally.
- Price at her size. Some brands charge more for big sizes. Fluffit does not. Every style is one price at every size.
Fluffy and large? Size up when in doubt
A double coat adds real inches. Measure across the fur, and if she lands between two sizes, take the larger one. Our fit model Ice Bear, a Samoyed with a 25.5 in chest, charts as an XXL but wears a 3XL because of her coat and ruff.
