The honest answer: it depends on the dog. Some dogs relax in clothes, some tolerate them for a photo, and some clearly dislike them. Most of the difference comes down to three things: how well it fits, how it was introduced, and how long she wears it. If she is truly unhappy, the answer is simple. Take it off.
We make dog dresses, so you might expect us to say every dog loves them. We would rather you have a happy dog in a few great photos than an unhappy dog in a dress.
Signs she is comfortable
- Her body looks loose and relaxed.
- She walks, sits and lies down the way she normally does.
- Her tail and ears sit in their usual position.
- She takes treats and plays normally.
- She ignores the dress after a minute or two.
Signs she is not
- She freezes, or refuses to walk.
- She keeps trying to bite, scratch or back out of it.
- Her tail tucks, her ears pin back, or she hides.
- She licks her lips, yawns or pants when she is not tired or warm.
- She walks stiffly or strangely.
A few seconds of surprise is normal the first time. Stress that does not fade is your cue to stop.
Fit is most of the story
A lot of "my dog hates clothes" is really "my dog hates clothes that pinch." Common culprits:
- Too tight at the chest. She should breathe, sit and lie down easily.
- Rubbing behind the front legs. Check the armpits after a short wear.
- Too long at the back. Fabric around the tail or back legs gets in the way. A dress should sit above the tail.
- A tight squeeze over the head. Pull-on styles need extra room for a big ruff or broad head.
Size by her chest measurement, over the fur, and size up if she is between sizes. Here is how to measure her.
How introduction changes everything
Dogs learn to like things that come with good stuff. A dress that shows up with treats and praise, a little at a time, is a very different experience from a dress pulled on in a rush five minutes before a party. We wrote a step-by-step plan: how to get your dog used to wearing a dress.
The rules we follow at Fluffit
- Short wears. An occasion dress is for the photos, the ceremony, the party. Not all day.
- Always supervised. Never leave her alone in a dress, and do not let her chew trims like tulle, bows or pearls.
- Mind the heat. Skip the dress on hot days, and watch fluffy, double-coated dogs closely.
- Off means off. If she is stressed, the dress comes off. There will be other photos.
- Keep her in charge of her body. She should be able to walk, sit, lie down, drink and toilet normally.
So why dress a dog at all?
For the same reason we dress up. Weddings, birthdays, portraits and holidays are moments people want to share with the dog they love. Done with care, a well-fitting dress for an hour is a small, happy part of that day. Done carelessly, it is not worth it.
Quick answers
Is it cruel to put clothes on a dog?
Not if the clothes fit, she is comfortable, and she wears them for short, supervised periods. It is unkind if she is clearly stressed and it stays on anyway.
Do big or fluffy dogs mind clothes more?
Fluffy dogs run warmer and carry more coat inside a garment, so fit and temperature matter more. Size by chest over the fur, and keep wears short.
How long can my dog wear a dress?
Think in terms of the event: the ceremony, the party, the photoshoot. Take it off once the moment is done.
